Visa Services FAQs

Here are common questions clients ask before starting. If you need more detail, we can walk you through your specific case.

What are my visa options?

Your visa options in Thailand depend on three key factors:

  1. Your purpose of stay
  2. How long you plan to stay
  3. Your qualifications and background

Because visa eligibility and requirements can vary based on individual circumstances, we recommend a brief consultation to confirm the most appropriate option and avoid delays or compliance issues.

How can I obtain a work permit together with a business visa?
A Non-Immigrant B (Business) visa and a Thai work permit must be sponsored by a Thai company. This means you must have a confirmed job offer or be appointed as a director of a properly registered Thai entity.
Yes. Job hunting and attending interviews are generally allowed. However, once you sign an employment contract or begin work, you must change to a Non-Immigrant B visa and obtain a work permit before starting employment.
To sponsor a Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit, a Thai company must have at least THB 2 million in registered capital and at least 4 Thai employees per a foreigner registered with Social Security, appropriate business activities matching the foreigner’s role, VAT registration (where applicable), and full tax and statutory compliance. Some requirements may be reduced or waived for BOI-promoted companies or specific positions, so a case-by-case review is recommended.
Timelines vary, but most cases take 2–6 weeks, depending on the visa type, company readiness, and the authority handling the application.
If you work remotely for a company outside Thailand and do not engage with Thai clients or businesses, you may qualify for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) or other long-stay options (for example, 10-year Work-from-Thailand LTR visa), depending on your profile and length of stay.
If you work remotely for a company outside Thailand and do not engage with Thai clients or businesses, you may qualify for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) or other long-stay options (for example, 10-year Work-from-Thailand LTR visa), depending on your profile and length of stay.
The Long-Term Resident (LTR) – Work-from-Thailand visa is designed for high-income professionals (min. 80,000 USD annual income) who work remotely for well-established overseas employers (public companies or private companies with combined turnover in the past 3 years of at least 50million USD). This visa allows eligible individuals to live in Thailand long-term without needing a Thai work permit, provided they work exclusively for their foreign employer.
This LTR category is for highly skilled professionals working in target industries (such as technology, R&D, digital, or advanced manufacturing) who have relevant expertise and are employed by a Thai company, BOI-promoted entity, or qualified foreign employer.

Applicants must generally have a minimum annual income of USD 80,000, or USD 40,000 in certain cases, relevant work experience, and an employer operating in approved industries, along with required health insurance.

Yes, in most cases eligible family members—such as a legally married spouse and dependent children—may apply for dependent visas linked to your status, whether you hold an LTR visa, Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), or a Non-Immigrant B visa. The specific requirements, permitted length of stay, and reporting obligations vary by visa type, and dependents are not permitted to work unless they obtain their own work authorization.
What visa do I need to do business in Thailand?
If you actively manage, operate, or work for a business in Thailand, you will generally need a Non-Immigrant B (Business) visa together with a work permit. Certain long-term or startup-focused options—such as SMART or LTR visas—may apply depending on your role, income, and business structure.
You may register a Thai company while outside Thailand or while on a short-term visa; however, once you actively act as a director or perform work for the company, a Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit are required.
Limited activities such as business meetings, site visits, or contract discussions may be allowed on a business or short-term visa, but hands-on work or management activities require proper visa and work authorization.

The SMART-S (Startup) visa is designed for startup founders and entrepreneurs who plan to establish or join a technology-based or innovation-driven business in Thailand. It allows an initial stay of up to 2 years to develop the startup business without a traditional work permit, subject to endorsement by relevant Thai authorities.

Yes. BOI-promoted companies and approved startup projects may benefit from reduced capital requirements and more flexibility in hiring foreigners.
What visa options are available for retirees in Thailand?

Thailand offers several visa options for retirees aged 50 and above, depending on financial profile and long-term plans:

  • Non-Immigrant O (Retirement): Requires THB 800,000 in a Thai bank account, or monthly pension of at least THB 65,000, or a qualifying combination, with a renewable 1-year stay.
  • Non-Immigrant OA (Long Stay 1 Year): Requires THB 800,000 in savings or THB 65,000 monthly income, plus mandatory health insurance, and is typically applied for from overseas.
  • Non-Immigrant OX (Long Stay 10 Years): Requires THB 3 million in a bank account (with ongoing balance requirements), health insurance, and is available to retirees from eligible countries only.
  • Wealthy Pensioner LTR: Requires annual passive income of at least USD 80,000 (or USD 40,000 with additional investments in Thailand), offering up to 10 years validity under BOI criteria.

Each option has different financial, insurance, and eligibility requirements. The most suitable visa depends on your income, assets, nationality, and preferred length of stay.

Yes, in most cases. Non-Immigrant O/OX Retirement visas that rely on savings require funds to be held in a Thai bank account, and the money must be deposited for a specific period (typically at least 3 months) before application and maintained at required levels afterward.

Health insurance is mandatory for certain retirement visas (such as Non-OA and OX) and may be required depending on where and how you apply. Coverage must meet minimum inpatient and outpatient thresholds.
In some cases, yes—certain visas can be converted inside Thailand. However, as a Thai bank account is required for a retirement visa and banks generally require a Non-Immigrant visa to open an account, we usually recommend obtaining a 90-day Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) visa before entering Thailand, then opening a bank account and extending to a 1-year stay.
A legally married spouse may apply for a dependent visa, subject to separate documentation and financial requirements.

A Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) visa is a standard retirement option based mainly on Thai bank savings or pension income, requiring annual renewals, 90-day reporting, and strict maintenance of funds in Thailand. In contrast, the LTR – Wealthy Pensioner visa is designed for retirees with high passive income or assets, offering a long-term stay of up to 10 years, reduced reporting requirements, eligibility for a digital work permit, tax exemption for overseas income brought into Thailand and additional privileges such as facilitated immigration procedures, making it more suitable for retirees seeking long-term stability and convenience.

What visa options are available for high-net-worth individuals in Thailand?
High-net-worth individuals may consider the LTR – Wealthy Global Citizen, LTR – Wealthy Pensioner (As explained in Retiring in Thailand section), or Thailand Privilege visa (formerly Elite Visa), depending on whether they are investing, retiring, or seeking a long-term lifestyle visa.
This LTR category is designed for individuals with at least USD 1 million in global assets who have made a minimum investment of USD 500,000 in Thailand (held in their personal name and counted as part of their global assets). It offers long-term residence of up to 10 years, the ability to live in Thailand long term, and access to LTR privileges such as tax exemption on overseas income remitted into Thailand, reduced immigration reporting, and facilitated immigration procedures.
The Wealthy Global Citizen LTR is asset- and investment-focused, suitable for high-net-worth individuals who may not have steady passive income, while the Wealthy Pensioner LTR is retirement-focused and primarily based on pension or other passive income. Both offer long-term stay, tax benefits, and similar immigration privileges, but differ in eligibility criteria and financial thresholds.
The Thailand Privilege visa is a membership-based long-term visa offering stays of 5 to 20 years in exchange for a one-time membership fee (from 900,000 THB to 5,000,000 THB). It is designed for individuals seeking long-term visas without financial, income, or investment requirements, but it does not permit work in Thailand.
